Hand painted sign, C 1950s.
The 26th Periodic Maintenance Squadron was a support unit for reconnaissance missions during the 1950s. They performed periodic maintenance on Boing jets. This sign came from the Lockbourne Air Force Base, Columbus, Ohio, which is now Rickenbacker Airport.
It's not known at what point the sign was repurposed into a card table, but aesthetically, the circle composition is brilliant!!! Form follows function, and perhaps the squadron needed to play some cards. It's an interesting piece of mid-century history, crafted in an unexpectedly utilitarian way. A real powerful statement visually. I love that someone carefully cut the perimeter of the table so that the sign can still be read perfectly. I'd recommend returning this piece to its intended use, making it into a table, and playing some poker. But leave your drinks on the floor.
